I’m on a trip... Seems natural to me.
I think that my most comfortable state is one of motion. Going from one place to another is one of my earliest memories.
When I say going from one place to another I mean traveling across the U.S.A. by car which I recall doing two to three times before I was 8; or traveling via ship from NY to Algeciras before I turned 8. Spending part of every year traveling through some series of places many will never see.. Madrid, Toledo, Lourdes, Lichtenstein, Lincolnshire, Stonehenge (before the fence), Neuschwanstein Castle, Sherwood Forest and the Major Oak (Robin Hood’s Tree) again before the fences… while the British military held exercises and crawled through the underbrush on either side of the path. Before I was 11 I had spent time in Venice, Paris, Munich, Monaco, Segovia, the La Mancha country, The Pyrenees, Andorra, Valencia, Portugal, Bern, Zurich, London, and other U.S./European locales,
The period of time from when I was eleven till I was seventeen seemed quiet to me… boring really. Based in one place while my Dad who had been in the Navy, retired and Joined the Civil Service. That didn’t stop us from traveling… it just curtailed our field of travel. Gave me a chance to learn that there are interesting things to see and do often within 30 min to an hour of my front door.
Of course this is all complicated by my desire to do it all, go to it all, see it all…
My earliest travel memories include visiting the Petrified Forest and the Grand Canyon with my parents and brother. I don’t remember if we were heading to an east coast or west coast duty station.
More recently a 40 year career in industry much of it involving locales in
different parts of the world has helped me build a range of experiences and insights I use in my daily travel and hope to share with others to enhance their travel experiences.
I could go on and on in this post but 50+ year memories may not be best. I think I’ll make a list, go and visit and write about places in a fresh context and share new and relevant info with you Judy’s and my soon to be readership.
All the best for now… and keep on moving on.
